Overview of 804 Aged Parent Visa

An aged parent visa subclass 804 is a permanent resident visa granted to older individuals with a child who is either a settled Australian permanent resident, an eligible New Zealander, or an Australian citizen. It enables such parents to reunite with their children and the rest of their family in Australia. Aside from this, an eligible aged parent can:

    • Reside in Australia for an indefinite period
    • Get access to Australia’s comprehensive healthcare scheme
    • Become a sponsor to bring other overseas family members to Australia
    • If fully eligible, apply for Australian citizenship by conferral

While the Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804) offers a more affordable pathway, it typically involves significantly longer processing times. If you’re looking for a faster route to reunite with your parents in Australia, you may want to explore the Contributory Aged Parent Visa, which offers substantially reduced waiting times in exchange for higher visa fees.

Subclass 804 Aged Parent Visa Requirements

See if your parent qualifies for the 804 visa based on these key eligibility criteria:

    • Applicant must be the parent of an Australian citizen, PR, or an eligible New Zealander
    • Applicant must have an approved sponsor (typically the child)
    • Applicant must be at least 67 years of age, or old enough to qualify for Australia’s age pension
    • Applicant must not have held or currently hold a Sponsored Parent subclass 870 visa
    • Applicant must not have any serious health condition or a character issue
    • Applicant must satisfy the balance-of-family test
    • Applicant may be required to provide an aged parent visa 804 assurance of support
    • Applicant must not have any history of cancelled or refused visas, or debt owed to the Australian Government
    • Applicant must sign the country’s values statement and must fully abide by all Australian laws

The main applicant also must be in Australia upon application and when a visa decision has been made. That said, the applicant will be granted an aged parent visa 804 bridging visa to be in Australia during the processing time.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the age limit for aged parent visa in Australia?

The aged parent visa 804 age requirement is at least 67 years old.

      What is a balance-of-family-test for 804 visas?

The Department wants to make sure that applicants have close family links to Australia. As such, applicants must either have at least half of their children and stepchildren living in Australia permanently as residents or citizens. Or simply, the parent must have more eligible children living here than any other country.

Can you leave Australia on an 804 visa?

This visa allows a travel facility of up to five (5) years effective from visa grant for approved applicants.

What is the difference between 864 and 804 visa?

Both subclasses are permanent resident visas for elderly parent(s) of eligible children. The difference is processing time and cost. An 864 visa takes less time to process but costs a lot more, while an aged parent residence visa subclass 804 takes more time to process but costs significantly less.

What are the disadvantages of 804 visa?

The old age parent visa 804 is intended for elderly parents overseas who may reunite with their eligible sponsoring children in Australia. However, the top cons include long processing times, requirements such as the balance-of-family test and age limit of 67.

What is the difference between subclass 804 and 143?

The subclass 143 visa is a “contributory” visa that’s way more expensive than a subclass 804 aged parent visa. However, the former takes much less time to process. The 804 aged parent visa takes much longer to process and finalise, though it costs a lot less.

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.

I cannot thank Shan and his entire team Devika Veluchamy, usman ali, enough for the incredible work they did on my protection visa case. After a long and stressful journey, my protection visa has finally been approved, and I truly believe this would not have been possible without their hard work, professionalism, dedication, and support throughout the entire process. Shan handled my case with great care, honesty, and deep knowledge of immigration law. He was always professional, patient, and genuinely supportive during one of the most difficult times of my life. His assistants and the whole team were also extremely kind, responsive, and helpful whenever I had questions or needed assistance.
