From the purposes of medical treatment to a unique visa arrangement between Australia and New Zealand citizens,
these are the other visa types available for eligible applicants who fit the requirements.
This permanent visa lets ex permanent residents and those who served in the Australian Defence Force to become permanent residents again and enjoy study, travel, and work privileges, as well as avail of government benefits such as Medicare.
If you are an individual who requires medical treatment, or needs to accompany someone who will undergo medical treatment, or if you are an organ donor, this temporary visa lets you stay in Australia until the end of the treatment. If you apply outside Australia, this visa is free of charge.
If you are a foreign crew member of an eligible ship (such as those for commercial trading and carrying paying passengers) that will enter Australia by sea, this visa allows you to perform your standard operational duties as a crew member while in Australia. You must be outside the country when you apply. This visa is also free.
For eligible New Zealand citizens who wish to travel to, live, study, and work in Australia, this temporary visa is valid for as long as you remain New Zealanders who abide by the conditions of your visa. From 1 July 2023, meanwhile, holders of this visa who are living in Australia for four years or more can apply directly for Australian citizenship by conferral.
A Bridging Visa A is essentially a temporary visa given to individuals who have already applied for a new substantive visa in Australia and are waiting for the outcome. If your current visa is about to expire, the BVA allows you to legally stay in Australia until a decision is made on your new visa application. However, it’s important to note that this visa doesn’t permit you to return to Australia should you decide to leave the country while your application is still underway.
It is similar to the BVA but with one key difference: it allows you to travel outside of Australia and return while your visa application is still under consideration. This is particularly useful for people who need to leave Australia for short periods, perhaps for personal or business reasons, without affecting the status of their ongoing visa application.
This third Bridging Visa is issued to candidates who find themselves in Australia without a valid visa and have subsequently applied for a substantive visa. Unlike the BVA, applicants for this visa might not have held a substantive visa when they made their application. The BVC allows them to legally remain in Australia while their visa application is being assessed and processed, but it does not allow re-entry to Australia if the visa holder leaves the country.
Finally, the Bridging Visa E is a visa for applicants who are in Australia unlawfully and aim to ‘regularise’ their status. It’s designed for those who are making arrangements to depart Australia and finalise their immigration matter or wait for an immigration decision. The BVE allows them to stay legally in Australia for a specified period. This provides them with a lawful status while they sort out their next steps. This visa also comes with conditions, such as reporting requirements to the Australian immigration authorities.
