Student Visa 500 Fees, Processing Times, and 2025 Updates

Unless exempted, fees for a student visa are A$2,000.00, according to the Department of Home Affairs. Processing times, meanwhile, vary on a case-by-case basis. Here’s an example of a student visa 500 processing time:

    • Schools sector: 25% of applications in 18 Days; 50% of applications in 35 Days; 75% of applications in 82 Days; 90% of applications in 7 Months
    • Vocational Education and training area: 25% of applications in 18 Days; 50% of applications in 3 Months; 75% of applications in 7 Months; 90% of applications in 9 Months
    • Higher education segment: 25% of applications in 10 Days; 50% of applications in 18 Days; 75% of applications in 90 Days; 90% of applications in 6 Months

    Australian Student Visa 500 Updates

Starting January 1, 2025, the Department of Home Affairs will no longer accept a Letter of Offer as proof of enrolment. Rather, you should provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) when you apply for a Student Visa 500.

This change is to ensure that students are fully committed to their educational provider. It is also to ensure alignment of onshore and offshore student visa application requirements. More importantly, it aims to provide more certainty for Australia’s international education system.

Without a COE, your application will be considered invalid and won’t be processed. You won’t also receive a bridging visa if your current visa expires. Because of this, you might need to explore other visa options or, in the worst-case scenario, you may need to leave Australia.

This new policy is applicable to anyone applying onshore for a Student Visa 500 from January 1, 2025, onwards. But if you have applied before the said date with a Letter of Offer, the good news is your application is still valid!

Hiring a Student Visa Expert for Stress-Free Applications

If you’re a student or a parent applying on your child’s behalf, you need the expert assistance of immigration law experts and student visa specialists. Here’s how hiring an immigration lawyer or registered agent can help you with your visa application:

Contacting a lawyer is important to help you better understand the requirements, qualifications, and general criteria of applying for a student subclass 500 visa. At Parish Patience, one of our top consultants will get to know you, attentively listen to your concerns, and provide advice on your next best legal steps.

    Thorough Eligibility Assessment

    Preparation

After all the assessments are undertaken, your student visa lawyer will help you prepare all the important documents and supporting evidence to guarantee your student visa application approval. This will make sure that you will not be refused a visa on the basis of missing or incorrect documents submitted.

    Application

Your migration agent will lodge the application on your behalf. At Parish Patience, we will give you 100% assurance that your application is all taken care of, which means that all you need to do at this point is relax and wait for the likely positive result.

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.
