    Australia 771 Visa

The 771 visa is an Australian Transit Visa designed for individuals who need to transit through Australia for no longer than 72 hours. This visa is for travellers who:

    • Are passing through Australia en route to another country
    • Want to briefly visit Australia during a layover
    • Need to transfer between international flights in Australia

If you are a holder of a Maritime Crew Visa and arrived in Australia by air with a subclass 771 transit visa, you have five (5) days to join your ship.

Do You Need a 771 Visa in Australia?

But first, you need to determine if you even need an Australia transit visa 771 to begin with.

You may not need a transit visa subclass 771 if, and only if:

    • You are a New Zealand passport holder who’s eligible for a special category subclass 444 visa
    • If you are eligible for either an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), visitor visa, or an eVisitor visa with longer stay periods.
    • You are an existing holder of a valid Australian temporary or permanent resident visa with transit permit.

Eligible Travellers to Transit Without a Visa (TWOV)

Another matter you need to be looking into is whether you are eligible to transit without a visa in Australia. If you are from an eligible country, you can transit Australia without a valid visa, provided the following conditions are met:

    • You are to arrive in Australia via aircraft
    • You have a verifiable ticket to depart Australia to a third country by aircraft within the next eight (8) hours since arriving
    • You have a valid travel document to come in or enter your destination country
    • You must not be required to clear immigration or exit the airport transit lounge before boarding your onward flight.
    • If you are required to clear immigration, such as collecting baggage, you need a valid Australian visa even if you’re from an eligible country and satisfy all other requirements.

Some of the eligible countries are as follows: Argentina, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States of America, among others. However, this does not apply to refugees and stateless persons.

    Subclass 771 Visa Conditions

Before your transit through Australia, check these conditional requirements for Australian visa 771.

    • You must depart Australia no later than 72 hours, except if you are a Maritime Crew Visa Subclass 988 holder, which permits you to remain in Australia for up to five days to join your ship
    • You must satisfy the Department’s health, character, and biometric requirements
    • You must arrange for adequate health insurance for the entirety of your brief stay in Australia
    • You must sign the Australian values statement (if over 18 years of age) and have no debt owed to the Australian Government

    771 Transit Visa Application Steps

Know the proper steps to apply for this visa as follows:

    1

Step One: See if you’re eligible

Based on the information we detailed above, check if you need an Australian visa 771 and, if you need one, review the eligibility criteria.

    2

    Step Two: Gather your documents

Compile all required documents such as your passport and other identification documents, booked ticket to your destination
country, and evidence that you can travel to that country, such as a visa or an equivalent document.

If you’re a maritime crew visa holder, the sea crew transit documents you need to submit include:

    • proof of your employment on the ship that you will join within 5 days
    • travel arrangements to your destination country
    • evidence that the ship you’re about to join is eligible
    • your seafarer’s identity document/card, and
    • more information from the shipping agent about the company name employing you, your intended date of arrival in Australia, port and expected date to join the ship, etc.

    3

    Step Three: Apply in ImmiAccount

Application for this visa is made online with an ImmiAccount. If you don’t have one yet, you can create an account and fill out the application and attach all pertinent documents.

    4

Step Four: Wait for the visa decision

You will be notified if your application was received, as well as if the Department needs more information from you. You must also duly inform the Department if there are mistakes in your application or any changes in your current circumstances.

771 Visa Australia Processing Time and Fees

The processing time for a subclass 771 transit visa ranges between 14 days and 32 days. It could take longer if your application is incomplete or inaccurate, if the Department is dealing with an unusually high volume of applications, and more.

This visa is free of charge. However, you may need to pay for other documentary requirements as requested, including biometrics, police clearance, and a health certificate.

Both processing times and fees are always subject to change, so it’s best to get sound legal advice and up-to-date information directly from the Department or a qualified immigration lawyer.

Do You Need a Subclass 771 Visa or Can You Transit Without a Visa (TWOV)?

Whether you require a Subclass 771 Transit Visa depends on your passport, layover duration, and flight connection:

    • Transit Without a Visa (TWOV): You do not need a visa if you hold an eligible passport, your transit is under 8 hours, you remain airside in the airport transit lounge, and your baggage is checked through to your final destination.
    • Subclass 771 Required ($0 Department Fee): You must apply if your layover is between 8 and 72 hours, you hold an ineligible passport, you must leave the terminal for hotel accommodation, you have to collect and re-check bags across separate tickets, or you transit overnight through airports with curfews (such as Sydney or Gold Coast).

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.
