Visa Invitation Letter Australia: How to Obtain & What It Must Include

Last Update

Are you planning to invite someone from your family or a friend to come to Australia? It is something wonderful! A visa invitation letter to Australia is one of the most powerful tools that you can share. It is not a must to attach the letter, but a nicely composed one could still make the visa application of a tourist (600) significantly stronger.

People often get anxious: “What should I write? Is it formal enough? Will it help at all?” But the good news is, if you know the essentials, the procedure becomes very easy.

At the end, you will get a clear checklist and a step-by-step process to easily draft your invitation letter for a visitor visa 600 Australia.

First Things First: Is an Invitation Letter Required?

Here’s the reality: there is a strong possibility that invitation letters are not legally required for an Australian tourist visa. You can apply for a visitor visa (subclass 600) even if you don’t have one. So, if you are thinking, “Do I really need to write this?” technically speaking, the answer is no.

However, the following is the reason it is highly recommended: a strong invitation letter.

  • The main reasons for the visit are spelled out lucidly
  • Shows that there is a true bond between you and the visitor
  • Outlines the money matters and the place to stay
  • Gives a positive impression of the visitor’s intent

Your letter will not be a sure ticket to approval, but it will give the Department of Home Affairs significant context that backs the application.

Who should provide one? Usually, the people who invite family or friends. Your letter indicates:

  • You are well acquainted with the guest
  • You have made arrangements for their visit
  • The reason for their visit is legitimate and defined
  • Money matters are clear

In short: Not obliging, yet a very wise tactic. It is free, takes only a short time, and can have a significant impact.

Who Can Write an Invitation Letter?

Determining eligibility is very important. Below is the list of people who are able to write credible letters:

    • Australian Citizens – The highest credibility. They can ask anyone to write a letter. Must provide proof of citizenship.
    • Permanent Residents (PR) – They can submit letters but need to show PR status with either a card or a copy of the grant letter.
    • Temporary Visa Holders (Work/Study) – They can write letters, but have to mention the type of visa and attach the visa grant letter. They are given slightly less weight than citizens/PRs.
    • Business Entities – Australian companies may sponsor business visitors, but it’s more usual to have individual letters of invitation.

    The Department considers the following:

    • Your legal status in Australia
    • Visitor financial support capability
    • Residential stability
    • Supporting documentation

Real scenario: You are on a work visa, and you invite your sister, so you may write the letter. Just attach your visa grant letter, and your letter becomes valid and helpful.

Step-by-Step: How to Actually Write the Letter

Writing is not something one should fear. Just go through these 8 steps:

    1

    Gather Documents

Copies of passports (yours and the visitor’s)

    2

    Proof of your Status

documents regarding employment/finances, accommodation info, and photos.

    3

    Choose Format

Use professional letterhead or plain format. Add your address, date, greeting (“To Whom It May Concern”), and subject line.

    4

    Opening Paragraph

Give your name, reason for the letter, and visitor info.

    5

    Describe Relationship

Detail the way you know them and why this visit is important.

    6

    Visit Details

Arrival and departure dates, length of stay, planned activities, and lodging.

    7

    Financial Arrangements

Who bears the cost, your financial capability, and documents to support your claim.

    8

    Formal Declaration

Assert that the information is correct, and the visitor will leave on the intended date.

    9

    List Attachments

Enumerate and explain each attachment clearly.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Small errors when writing a support letter or an invitation for a visitor visa can lead to a significant delay. Below are the mistakes that most often cause difficulties to applicants and how to prevent them.

Mistake 1: Providing Generic or Vague Information

When you say that “the visitor will come sometime soon,” this is a red flag. Always provide precise arrival and departure dates so that the Department can make a proper assessment of the trip.

    Mistake 2: Inaccurate Details

Doubt will be created if there are misspelled names, wrong dates, or any information that does not match the passport. Ensure that each and every detail is exactly the same as the visitor’s passport and personal records.

    Mistake 3: Weak Financial Evidence

Merely stating “I can cover the costs” will not suffice. Show recent bank statements or financial documents to prove the ability.

    Mistake 4: Unclear Relationship Description

Instead of vague statements like “we’re friends,” provide the way of acquaintance and the history of the relationship.

Mistake 5: Letters That Are Too Long

Do not write five-page essays, which are not needed. A clear, 1-2 page letter is more professional, and the Department can easily assess it.

    Mistake 6: Missing Required Documents

Not including your visa status, passport copy, or proof of residence can lead to delays. It is better to use a checklist.

    Mistake 7: Informal Tone

Use professional language. This is an official communication, not a casual message.

    Supporting Documents to Attach

    Essential

    • Passport bio page
    • Proof of Australian status
    • Proof of address
    • Bank statements if sponsoring

    Recommended

    • Photos together
    • Employment letter
    • Visitor’s passport copy
    • Visitor’s home country ties

    Optional

    • Correspondence with the visitor

Attachments enhance credibility, reassuring the department of the authenticity of the visit.

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.
