Post-Study Work Visa Australia: Options After You Graduate

Last Update

Congrats, you’ve made it to the finish line of an Australian university! Now, consider the next step as a thrilling one: what is it? As per the 485 visa Australia (Temporary Graduate Visa), Australia’s genuine post-study work visa options are available to you, and you can make a smooth switch from education to a career that potentially leads to permanent residency. All students, whether they have bachelor’s, master’s, vocational qualifications or graduated from a regional university, have the opportunity to build their respective future here through the streams and pathways. We are going to take you through the temporary graduate visa streams in Australia, eligibility, the length of your stay, work rights, and planning for PR. At Parish Patience Immigration Lawyers, we focus on confidently guiding graduates like you through the next chapter after graduation.

What is the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa? Why It Exists

The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) permits international students who have completed their studies in Australia and meet certain requirements to remain and work in Australia for a specified period. The visa reverses the situation of sending you back right after graduation by saying, “Stay. Work. Build your career here. Think of permanent residency.”

Why did Australia create this visa? Because it is logical to rely on the talent developed during the study period. You are already familiar with the Australian work culture, you have been living here, you have graduated; thus, letting that talent go would be a loss.

Real-life value:

  • You acquire real and professional experience that will be useful in the future for a visa or PR applications.
  • You create local networks and connections with employers.
  • You receive a full-time salary and take a substantial step in your professional career, not restricted by the 48-hour student visa limit.
  • Your 485 duration can be considered for a skilled migration or employer sponsorship pathway.

Strategically speaking, this is not only the authorisation to work. It is Australia indicating: “Prove your dedication, put in your part, and then we can discuss the issue of permanent residence.” A feasible timeline could be: firstly, to obtain your 485 visa, secondly, to stay employed for 1.5-4 years, and finally, to submit your PR application based on your previous experience.

The Three Main Streams: Which One Are You?

Your 485 visa pathway would be greatly guided by the course you took and the university you attended. Here are three main streams:

1

Stream 1: Post-Higher Education Work Stream (Most Common)

Who qualifies: Those who have completed a bachelor’s (including honours), master’s, or doctoral degree from an Australian university can apply for this visa.

How long can you stay?

  • Bachelor’s degree: approx. 2 years
  • Master’s coursework: approx. 2 years
  • Master’s by research / PhD: approx. 3 years

Exceptions:

For Hong Kong/BNO passport holders: maximum of 5 years.

For certain STEM/honours degrees: under older concessions, up to ~4 years.

Work rights: Full work rights in any occupation (this is not limited to your field of study).

Real scenario: A developer completes a Master’s in IT. He gets the Post-Higher Education Stream, which lasts about ~2 years. He can work in development or project management at his discretion, depending on his career aspirations.

2

Stream 2: Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

Who qualifies: Those who hold vocational qualifications, including associate degrees, diplomas, advanced diplomas, or trade certifications, to name a few. The qualification you have must match the occupation requirements

Duration: Normally, it takes a maximum of around ~18 months.

Work restrictions: Usually, you are supposed to work in the area corresponding to your qualification.

Real scenario: After finishing a Diploma in Hospitality Management, Maria goes for a stream application and gets a stay of ~18 months and works in hospitality/event management, not necessarily IT.

3

Stream 3: Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream

For this category, candidates are graduates who possess the first Post-Higher Education Work Stream visa already and whose studies took place in a regional area (and they complied with the regional living or studying requirements).

Duration: An additional 1-2 years depending on the region category.

Main advantage: After the first 2 years on your Post-Higher Education 485 visa, if you have studied and lived in a regional area, you could apply for this second stream and have more time added to your stay.

Application Process: Step-by-Step Timeline

Here’s how you apply for the 485 visa and what realistic timeline you should expect.

3-4 months before graduation:

  • Book your English test (if needed).
  • Gather university documents: transcripts, confirmation of completion.
  • Arrange police clearances (AFP).

2-3 months before graduation:

  • You are required to take an English proficiency test.
  • Ask your educational institution for a letter confirming your enrollment.
  • Make sure your overseas student health insurance (OVHC) is still valid.

1 month before graduation:

  • Double-check eligibility and stream.
  • Verify your institution is CRICOS-registered.

Within 6 months of graduation:

  • Submit your application for a 485 visa through ImmiAccount online.
  • Attachments: completion letter, transcripts, English test results, health insurance proof, police clearance, passport.
  • Application fee is to be paid (~AUD $1,945 for the primary applicant).

After lodgement:

  • For the majority, processing takes approximately 2-4 weeks, given that all is well.
  • The office might ask for additional information; be prompt in your reply.

Intermediate solution: In case of perfect synchronisation, you submit your application right after graduation and your visa is approved soon after, then you are able to start working as a full-time employee.

Your PR Pathway From 485 Visa: Three Main Options

Although provisional, the 485 visa is actually a stepping stone to permanent residency (PR). Here is a brief summary of the most common pathways:

Option 1: Employer Sponsorship (482/186 Pathway)

  • You are allowed to work on your 485 visa.
  • Search for an employer who can sponsor you for a 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage or equivalent) or a 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) visa.
  • Get the PR through 186 after you have fulfilled the requirements. True story: Sofia is a tech person who is working on her 485. She is being nominated by her employer for a permanent job. Transition from 485 to 186 PR.

Option 2: Skilled Independent Visa (189)

  • You submit your application through migration based on points while you’re still on your 485 visa.
  • You have to score at least 65 points (age, experience, qualification, English).
  • In case of selection, you become a permanent resident (PR) without any need for labour or state sponsorship.

A real-world situation: a Developer who is on a 485 Post-Higher Education stream, acquires 70 points and gets an invitation for an 189 skilled visa.

Option 3: State Sponsorship (190 or 491)

  • While on the 485, you perform a state nomination application (190 for direct PR; 491 for regional provisional).
  • The state assigns you to a desired occupation; you proceed with the visa application. Actual case: Maria has a 485, applies for the nomination of the state of Victoria and gets the 190 visa for her permanent residency.

These routes are not just theoretical but also very practical and utilised by various graduates.

Work Rights & Practical Considerations on 485

One key benefit of the Australian Post Study Work Visa is the independence and flexibility it generously confers.

Work rights:

  • The full-time job option is available (the limit of 48 hours per week for student visa holders does not apply). ([turn0search0])
  • You can work wherever you want, as long as you are able to work for any employer in any occupation (only some restrictions if you are on a fluency stream).
  • The work location is not restricted; it can be in any territory or state of Australia.
  • Holding several jobs at the same time is permissible.
  • You are able to go to Australia and back without restrictions.
  • You may attend classes for a limited period while working.

Practical considerations:

  • In case it is necessary, do not forget to modify your Tax File Number (TFN); superannuation (~10.5%) must be contributed by the employer.
  • Your OVHC should be active all the time.
  • Maintain your employment records and note the protections provided by Fair Work.
  • Anticipated income: the range of salaries for fresh graduates is between AUD $50,000-80,000, depending on the area of their work and location.
