Agriculture Visa Australia: Visa Options for Farm Workers

The agricultural sector of Australia thrives on a diverse workforce, and skilled farm workers are in high demand. If you are an individual looking to contribute your expertise in Australia’s agricultural landscape, exploring your options can be your crucial first step.

This guide will dive into the various visa pathways available to farm workers. It provides valuable insights so you can choose the most suitable option for your current situation and career goals.

What is Agriculture Visa in Australia?

The agricultural visa program is intended to address the labour shortage in Australia’s agricultural sector. It is a temporary visa that allows individuals from eligible countries to work in the horticulture, dairy, and fisheries industries in Australia.#

This visa can potentially play an important role in the country’s agricultural growth and can provide valuable work opportunities for qualified individuals. However, it is important to note that it is still under development and does not yet accept applications as of this time.

Who Can Apply for Australia Agriculture Visa?

Pathway to Agriculture Work

There are several visa routes for individuals who want to work in the agricultural sector in Australia. These visa categories each hold a different set of eligibility criteria and conditions. Here are the visa options that you can choose from:

  • International students: Full-time students who hold a standard student visa can pursue agriculture programs that may give them the opportunity to land on practical placements. However, it does not entitle them to full-time agricultural work.
  • Temporary Graduates: Temporary graduates are those who have graduated from an academic program in Australia. If they wish to pursue a career related to their field of study such as agriculture, their visa can allow them to work short-term. Similar to the student visa holders, temporary graduates are also not automatically entitled to long-term agricultural work.
  • Subclasses 417 and 462 Visa: Working Holiday Makers are those who hold the subclass 417 (Working Holiday) and subclass 462 (Work and Holiday). These visas allow young adults to participate in short-term work and travel experiences in Australia, which includes agriculture and related sectors. However, work limitations of these visa options might not be ideal for long-term work in the agricultural sector.
  • Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) and Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) holders: Individuals who hold either a TPV or SHEV can be eligible to apply for the agricultural visa under specific circumstances and with certain conditions.
  • PALM Scheme Visa holders: The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme visa is the primary pathway for individuals who seek to work in the country’s agricultural sector. It offers opportunities for longer-term stays and work compared to other visa options.

Agricultural Visa Australia (Subclass 403)

The PALM Scheme Visa (Subclass 403) might be the key you need so that you can work in Australia’s agricultural sector. This visa program is specifically designed for citizens from eligible Pacific Island countries and Timor-leste and it offers them the chance to work in agricultural and related industries.

Compared to other visa options, the PALM scheme stands out because of its potential for longer stays, visa renewals, and even chance for a permanent residency.

However, it is important to understand the specific details of the program such as the eligibility criteria and application process.

Australia Agriculture Visa Eligible Countries

The discussions for this visa are still underway to include additional Southeast Asian countries in the future. Based on the latest list from the Department of Home Affairs, individuals who hold a valid passport from these countries below are eligible to apply:

  • Timor-Leste
  • Fiji
  • Kiribati
  • Nauru
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Samoa
  • Solomon Islands
  • Tonga
  • Tuvalu
  • Vanuatu

While the post-study work visa is not a direct route to PR, it can effectively equip you with the tools and experience so you can succeed in your PR applications in the future.

Agricultural Visa Australia Requirements

To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen in any of the eligible countries
  • Age: You must be at least 21 years old at the time of application
  • Family: You must not have a family member with you when you apply for this visa
  • English Language proficiency: You must have a minimum IELTS score of 4.0, with a higher score potentially required for specific occupations.

  • Sponsorship: You must be sponsored by a Temporary Activities Sponsor (TAS) approved by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Agricultural Work Australia Visa to PR

The Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) is a new visa program that will offer up to 3,000 visas each year to people from Pacific Island countries. The visa is designed to help Pacific Islanders live and work in Australia permanently.

The PEV is said to complement the PALM scheme as it provides a pathway to permanent residency for Pacific Islanders who are looking to build a life in Australia. While the Agricultural visa is a temporary work visa specifically for holders who work in the agricultural sector, the PEV offers a broader range of opportunities.

It means that Pacific Islanders who start on the Agricultural Visa may be able to transition to the PEV after they gain experience and qualifications in Australia.

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.

I cannot thank Shan and his entire team Devika Veluchamy, usman ali, enough for the incredible work they did on my protection visa case. After a long and stressful journey, my protection visa has finally been approved, and I truly believe this would not have been possible without their hard work, professionalism, dedication, and support throughout the entire process. Shan handled my case with great care, honesty, and deep knowledge of immigration law. He was always professional, patient, and genuinely supportive during one of the most difficult times of my life. His assistants and the whole team were also extremely kind, responsive, and helpful whenever I had questions or needed assistance. I highly recommend Shan and his entire team to anyone dealing with immigration or protection visa matters. Thank you again for everything you have done for me and my future. I will always be grateful. — Abbas Khan
