417 and 462 Visa

Difference Between 417 and 462 Visas in Australia

Last Update

For those dreaming of an epic Australian adventure, two great visa options are the 417 and 462 working holiday visas. As a visa holder, you can stay and work in Australia for up to 12 months – it’s a fantastic way to live abroad temporarily while earning money.

Both visas offer exciting opportunities for backpackers, students, and young travellers to explore Australia. But while the 417 and 462 share some common traits, there are also important distinctions between these Australian working holiday visas that you need to weigh up.

417 and 462 Visas: The Similarities

The 417 and 462 visas offer the opportunity to live, work and explore Australia for up to 12 months as a backpacker. As a visa holder, you can pick up casual employment, finance your travels around the country, and immerse yourself in the unique Australian way of life during your stay.

Main features that the 417 and 462 visas have in common:

  • They are temporary visas that enable the visa holder to stay in Australia and work for up to 12 months. This gives you a year to take on short term jobs, fund your travels, and experience living in Australia.
  • As the visa holder, you can freely enter and exit Australia any number of times while your 417 or 462 visa remains valid.
  • Both visas allow you to enrol in courses and study for up to 4 months in Australia. So you could study a short course or do a semester at an Australian university.
  • A key benefit is that you can apply for a second work and holiday or working holiday visa. This lets you extend your time in Australia to work and travel for another year. To qualify, you need to complete 3 months of specified work in regional Australia during your first visa.

Overall, both the 417 and 462 provide similar rights, benefits and opportunities in Australia. They let the visa holder stay temporarily, work, travel freely, study for a short period, and potentially extend their stay for another year.

417 vs 462 Visa: What’s the Difference?

417 vs 462 Visa

While the 417 and 462 provide similar temporary rights in Australia, there are also notable differences between these subclasses that are important to understand. Key areas where the visas differ include eligibility criteria, list of eligible nationalities, and visa caps that restrict how many 462 visas can be issued.

On Eligibility Criteria

The 417 and 462 visas have differing eligibility criteria applicants must meet. The 417 visa targets young adults aged 18-30 from eligible countries, while the 462 visa has a wider 18-35 age range and also requires functional English ability.

Reviewing the requirements for each subclass is important to determine which visa you can qualify for.

Requirements for Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)

For the Australian working holiday visa 417, the main requirements are:

  • Your age is 18 to 30 years when you apply
  • You hold a passport from an eligible country
  • You meet health and character requirements
  • You prove you have sufficient funds ($5,000 minimum)
  • You have not previously entered Australia on a 417 or 462 visa

So the 417 is suitable for young adults and backpackers from eligible countries. You cannot have travelled to Australia previously on a working holiday visa.

Requirements for Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)

The Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) is a popular visa choice for young adults who want to live and work in Australia temporarily. When applying for this visa, there are some key requirements to meet:

  • Age 18-30 years
  • A passport from an eligible country
  • Meet health and character criteria
  • Show access to a minimum of $5,000 funds
  • No prior 417/462 visa

So the 417 is good for young adults and backpackers from eligible countries. You can’t have travelled to Australia before on a working holiday visa.

On Eligible Countries

The 417 and 462 visas have different lists of eligible passport countries. The 417 covers more European nations, while the 462 targets countries across Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East. Your nationality determines which visa you can apply for.

417 Visa Eligible Countries

The 417 working holiday visa is available to passport holders from specific European and Asian countries.

The eligible nations are Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Unlike the more globally focused 462 visa, the 417 visa mainly targets European backpackers, along with passport holders from Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

462 Visa Eligible Countries

The 462 work and holiday visa is available to passport holders from specific countries across Asia, Latin America, Europe and the United States.

The eligible nations are Argentina, Austria, Chile, China, Czechia, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Peru, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, United States and Vietnam.

Unlike the 417 visa which targets European backpackers, the 462 visa opens up the Australian working holiday experience for many Asian countries, as well as nations in South America.

On Limitation Caps

Another major difference is that the 417 visa is uncapped, while the 462 visa is subject to annual limits.

This means there is no restriction on the number of 417 working holiday visas that can be granted each year. Any eligible applicants can get a 417 visa.

But the 462 work and holiday visa is capped – there are limits on how many can be issued annually from each country. The limited places fill up quickly when applications open on July 1 each year.

So, for a 462 visa, you need to apply as soon as possible once the visa year opens. Otherwise, you may miss out until next year’s quota.

The uncapped nature of the 417 visa provides more flexibility for eligible applicants. But the 462 visa requires forward planning and prompt application submission.

Application Process and Fees for Both Visas

Visa Application Process

Despite their differences, the 417 and 462 visa application processes are much the same:

  • Applications are submitted online via ImmiAccount
  • You complete the visa application forms with your details
  • Supporting documents like your passport, police checks, medicals, etc, are attached
  • The visa application fee is paid – this is currently $635 for both subclasses
  • Health examinations are undertaken as required

Standard processing times are around 1 to 2 months once a complete application is lodged.

Assuming you meet all the eligibility criteria, provide complete documentation, and satisfy health checks, the process is generally smooth and hassle-free.

Using a migration agent can also help guide you through the application process if you need assistance.

Conclusion

The 417 and 462 visas provide amazing opportunities to live, work and travel in Australia temporarily as a backpacker or holiday worker.

While they share some core traits around duration, work rights, re-entry and applying for a second visa, there are also key differences in eligibility requirements, eligible nationalities and visa caps that distinguish the 417 and 462 subclasses.

So weigh up whether you are eligible for the uncapped 417 visa or need to apply for a 462 visa spot subject to limitation caps.
