Sibling Visa: Bringing Your Brothers and Sisters to Australia

Australia, with its sunny beaches and bustling cities attracts many, including your siblings. But how can they join you? Unlike parents or spouses, there is no specific sibling visa in Australia.

As the Australian migration landscape keeps evolving, skilled professionals and regional development play an important role as it opens doors for your siblings though skilled work visas. The sponsored family visas are also there to allow relatives for temporary visits.

In this post, we will explore several visa routes your siblings can take in coming to Australia.

Sibling Visa Australia: Your Visa Options and Requirements

Sibling Visa Requirements

While there is specifically no Australia sibling visa, brothers and sisters of Australian citizens and permanent residents still have several paths to reunite. Consider it like you are choosing the right hiking trail, because each visa option that allows your siblings to enter the country has different specific conditions.

Here are the various visa types which your siblings can apply for:

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

The Subclass 600 Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream) can be your sibling’s pathway to Australia. While this is not a dedicated “sibling visa,” it can also serve as a visitor visa for siblings Australia offers from its various visa options.

Subclass 600 will allow your brothers and sisters to temporarily stay in the country for tourism or leisure. It grants them up to three months of temporary visit and they are allowed for multiple entries as long as it’s within the validity period.

To be eligible, your sibling must fulfil the following requirements for the subclass 600 visa:

  • Must be a biological or legal sibling of a permanent Australian resident
  • Must meet the health and character standards
  • Must be financially capable of supporting the entire stay in the country
  • Must show intention of temporary stay in the country
  • Must not intend to work nor study in Australia (unless you are applying for an additional student visa)

Skilled Work Regional Visa (Family-Sponsored)

The SubClass 491 also known as the Skilled Work Regional visa can be a good starting point for your siblings. If your brother and sisters are skilled professionals, they can be allowed to live, work, and study in Australia for five years.

In order to qualify, these requirements must be met:

  • The skilled work must be in the Skilled Occupation List
  • Must be under 45 years old at the time of application
  • Must meet English language proficiency standard
  • Must have a positive skills assessment for the nominated occupation
  • Must be nominated by a state or a government agency, or an eligible family member

After three years of living and working in Australia, your sibling can then apply for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa Subclass 191. This will allow them to avail of the same stability that you enjoy living permanently in the country.

Remaining Relative Visa (115/835)

Another potential route for permanent residency that your siblings can take is through the Remaining Relative Visa Subclass 115 and 835.

The Subclass 835 is for applicants already in Australia but holding a different valid visa and with at least one close family member (a permanent resident) sponsoring them. While the Subclass 115 is designed for those who are outside Australia and whose only remaining relatives are permanently residing there.

While each subclass has its own specific conditions, these are the general requirements to apply for this visa:

  • Must be a biological or legal sibling of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must meet health and character standards
  • Must have enough funds to financially support the entire stay in the country
  • Must not initially intend to work or study in the country

For your sibling to be eligible for the subclass 115, he/she must be below 45 years old and must be outside Australia at the time of application and grant of visa.

On the other hand, the visa for siblings in Australia is the subclass 835. This is under the condition that your sibling holds a different valid visa at the time of the subclass 835 application. While there is no age restriction for this visa, it requires sponsorship from a close family member in Australia.

Carer Visa (116/836)

The Carer Visa subclasses 116 and 836 are designed for individuals who will provide long-term care to a close relative in Australia.

The subclass 116 is for applicants outside Australia while the subclass 836 is for those who are already in Australia. These are the key requirements that need to be fulfilled when applying for either of the subclass:

  • Applicant must be closely related to the person needing care
  • The close relative in Australia must act as the sponsor and therefore must meet sponsorship requirements like financial stability and character checks
  • The person needing care must have a significant medical condition that requires an ongoing care and assistance
  • Applicant must show the skills and capacity to provide the required care for the relative
  • Must meet health and character requirements
  • Must show financial capacity to support the entire stay in Australia

Sibling Visa Australia Processing Time and Cost

The sibling visa Australia cost and processing time vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant.

Subclass 600 Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream)

  • Cost: AUD$ 145 – AUD$ 365 (depending on age and length of stay)
  • Processing time: 20 to 40 business days

Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional Visa

  • Cost: AUD$ 1,530 (application fee) + AUD$ 480 (Medicare) + assessment fees as may be required
  • Processing time: four to nine months

Subclass 115/835 Remaining Relative Visa

  • Cost: AUD$ 7,935 (application fee) + AUD$ 480 (Medicare) + assessment fees as may be required (Subclass 115 only)
  • Processing time: nine to 24 months

Subclass 116/836 Carer Visa

  • Cost: AUD$ 7,935 (application fee) + AUD$ 480 (Medicare) + assessment fees as may be required (Subclass 116 only)
  • Processing time: nine to 24 months

It must be noted that the costs mentioned are just the base fees. Additional charges for police clearance, medical examinations, and biometrics may also apply. The processing times for each visa subclass stated above are also rough estimates and can fluctuate depending on the volume of application or the specific circumstance of the applicant.

I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.

I cannot thank Shan and his entire team Devika Veluchamy, usman ali, enough for the incredible work they did on my protection visa case. After a long and stressful journey, my protection visa has finally been approved, and I truly believe this would not have been possible without their hard work, professionalism, dedication, and support throughout the entire process. Shan handled my case with great care, honesty, and deep knowledge of immigration law. He was always professional, patient, and genuinely supportive during one of the most difficult times of my life. His assistants and the whole team were also extremely kind, responsive, and helpful whenever I had questions or needed assistance. I highly recommend Shan and his entire team to anyone dealing with immigration or protection visa matters. Thank you again for everything you have done for me and my future. I will always be grateful. — Abbas Khan
