Visitor Visa: Sponsored Family Stream vs Tourist Stream

Last Update

Is your desire to see family and friends in Australia burning bright? Overseas visitors face two principal choices for Visitor Visa applications: The Sponsored Family Stream and the Tourist Stream.

What distinctions exist between these streams, and how can you determine which one suits your needs better?

This guide presents a detailed comparison of essential features for each option to assist your decision-making process.

Visitor Visa (Sponsored Family Stream)

Through the Sponsored Family Stream, Australian citizens, along with permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens, can sponsor their family members to stay in Australia.

The list of potential sponsorship candidates extends to spouses, de facto partners, dependent children, parents, grandparents, and additional categories.

The Sponsored Family Stream offers several advantages:

  • Sponsor required – your sponsor must meet eligibility requirements, including character and income criteria, and may need to lodge a security bond.
  • No need to provide evidence of funds – your sponsor agrees to cover your costs.
  • Maximum stay is up to 12 months per visit (older sources mentioning multi‑year stays are outdated).
  • Unlimited entries to Australia within the visa validity period.
  • No work rights are granted under this visa stream.
  • Applicants must meet health, character, and any security requirements.
  • Applications must be lodged from outside Australia.

Processing times for the Sponsored Family Stream are generally slower – about 50 to 70 days for 75% of applications.

Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream)

People who wish to explore Australia as tourists or visit friends and family while participating in amateur sports events can choose the Tourist Stream option. A major advantage of the Tourist Stream is the absence of a need for an Australian sponsor, which allows direct personal visa application.

Here are important aspects regarding the Tourist Stream:

  • You can stay in Australia for up to 12 months per visit during the overall visa validity period.
  • This visa is strictly for tourism and leisure purposes only – you are not allowed to work.
  • You must prove you have enough money to cover all costs for your stay, including flights, accommodation, and daily expenses.
  • Study or training is limited to a maximum of 3 months.
  • Applications must be made while you are outside Australia.

The Tourist Stream grants individuals the ability to arrange their Australian vacation independently without requiring a local sponsor. Processing times are generally faster – about 20 to 33 days for 75% of applications.

Sponsored Family Stream vs Tourist Stream: Which is Better?

Applicants for an Australian Visitor Visa face the decision of selecting between the Sponsored Family Stream and the Tourist Stream. Each possesses distinct benefits and drawbacks that set them apart.

The Sponsored Family Stream provides the benefit of supported stays in Australia for up to 12 months per visit, with multiple entries allowed, and without the need for the applicant to prove personal funds – but it requires a qualified family sponsor.

The Tourist Stream presents a more straightforward alternative for individuals seeking to engage in visits up to 12 months without sponsor requirements. You must manage the entire process yourself and provide proof of sufficient funds.

During their validity period, both streams permit multiple entry into Australia. The application charge for Sponsored Family and Tourist visas is approximately AUD 145–195 (check the Department of Home Affairs website for the latest fee).

Visitor Visa Processing Times and Fees

Visa Processing Time

The current visa processing times are:

  • Sponsored Family Stream: 75% of applications processed in 50–70 days.
  • Tourist Stream: 75% of applications processed in 20–33 days.

Processing times can vary by case and location. Always confirm the latest timeframes on the Department of Home Affairs website.

In certain situations, additional charges may apply. The government establishes all fees, which remain subject to change.

Applying With a Visa Professional for Expert Assistance

Australia’s visa system presents a complex network of requirements that demand supporting documents and eligibility proofs. The process becomes much easier when you work with an experienced migration agent. They help determine the best visa category for your needs and ensure your documents are decision‑ready.

Conclusion

To select the appropriate visa pathway for either a family reunion or a holiday in Australia, it is essential to understand the distinctions between the Sponsored Family Stream and Tourist Stream.

The Sponsored Family Stream offers a pathway if you have an eligible family sponsor and wish to visit without proving financial capacity, but it requires longer processing times and does not allow work.

The Tourist Stream is faster to process, easier to apply for independently, and suits travellers with shorter‑term plans who can provide proof of sufficient funds.

Thong and Marlene helped my partner gain permanent residency in Australia. We did the application ourselves but it turned out lots of information we needed to provide was missing. I trusted Parish Patience with my migration and skills assessment process and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Initially, I was advised by Mr Golam and Upasana to proceed with my Subclass 485 pathway. Based on their advice, I paid for skills assessment and also completed a PTE exam. However, I later found out that an important requirement for my VETASSESS application — having at least one year of relevant post-qualification work experience — had not been clearly explained to me before lodging the application. My application was submitted using work experience from before my studies and the outcome was negative. After that, I was advised that applying through Engineers Australia using the CDR pathway would be easier and would give me a better chance of receiving a positive skills assessment outcome. I followed their advice again, paid additional fees, but unfortunately received another negative outcome. During this process, two separate Subclass 485 visa applications were lodged and later withdrawn. I experienced significant financial loss through application fees, assessments, and English testing costs. I was fortunate that I still held a valid student visa, which made it possible to withdraw the applications without further complications. From my personal experience, I felt the communication, assessment of eligibility, and overall service quality were poor. I also did not receive any compensation or satisfactory resolution for the losses I experienced. I hope future clients receive clearer advice about eligibility requirements and possible risks before committing financially.

I cannot thank Shan and his entire team Devika Veluchamy, usman ali, enough for the incredible work they did on my protection visa case. After a long and stressful journey, my protection visa has finally been approved, and I truly believe this would not have been possible without their hard work, professionalism, dedication, and support throughout the entire process. Shan handled my case with great care, honesty, and deep knowledge of immigration law. He was always professional, patient, and genuinely supportive during one of the most difficult times of my life. His assistants and the whole team were also extremely kind, responsive, and helpful whenever I had questions or needed assistance. I highly recommend Shan and his entire team to anyone dealing with immigration or protection visa matters. Thank you again for everything you have done for me and my future. I will always be grateful. — Abbas Khan
