As with other types of visas, processing times depend on individual circumstances, the volume of carer visa applications, and the accuracy and completeness of submitted documents. But the estimated processing time for Carer Visa 836 is up to four (4) and a half years.
You would need to prepare at least A$2,720 for the first assessment stage. This is for you as the principal applicant. You would need to pay additional fees if you’re applying with a partner, child, or other family members. Also, note that you will need to pay an additional fee of AUD 2,065.00 per person on the application for the second assessment stage if you pass the first.
Under Australian migration law, an 836 visa can only be granted if the applicant proves that the required care cannot reasonably be provided by Australian community care services or another relative in Australia.

As the carer visa 836 applicant, you must meet all character and health checks. Importantly, you must be in Australia during application and hold a substantive visa (except a transit visa 771).
If it’s an ongoing application, you need to inform the Department ASAP and submit Form 1022. While your visa may be refused because of this, you may still apply for a different visa type that you may be eligible for. It’s best to consult with a migration expert for this matter.
Both subclasses 836 and 116 are permanent carer visas. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely to care for a sponsoring relative who is chronically ill and needs substantial physical and medical support.
Submission of carer visa 836 requirements can only be done by paper through a courier or post service. But you can pay the application fees online.
The only difference between subclasses 116 and 836 is the location where the application was made. For a subclass 836 visa, you must be in Australia when you apply, whereas you must be outside Australia for a subclass 116 visa lodgement.
